WALNUT APPLESAUCE CAKE

1 cup sugar
1 tsp cinnamon or allspice
1/2 tsp cloves
1/4 tsp nutmeg
1/2 cup shortening
1 egg or 2 yolks, unbeaten
1 tsp vanilla
1 cup fairly thick strained applesauce (unsweetened)
2 cups sifted all-purpose flour
1/2 tsp salt
1 tsp soda
1 tsp baking powder
1/2 cup halved, raisins (may be omitted)
1 cup coarsely chopped walnuts

Mix sugar and spices, add gradually to shortening, creaming thoroughly. Add egg and beat well. Stir in vanilla and applesauce. Add flour, sifted with salt, soda, and baking powder; beat smooth. Add raisins, then chopped walnuts. Bake in greased 8x8x2 inch square loaf pan in moderate oven (350 degrees) 50 to 60 minutes. cool, frost with favorite icing.
