DEVILS FOOD CAKE

1/2 cup shortening
1-1/2 cup sugar
2 large eggs
1-3/4 cup sifted flour
1/2 tsp salt
1 tsp baking soda
1 cup sour milk (not too old) or sweet milk
2 squares unsweetened chocolate (2 oz) melted

Cream shortening, add sugar gradually, and cream until fluffy. Blend in well beaten eggs. Sift flour, salt, and soda together. Add to creamed mixture alternately with milk. Blend in the melted chocolate (slightly cooled). Bake in 2 round 8 inch or 9 inch layer pans (greased and floured) in medium oven 350 degrees for 30 to 35 minutes. (Sour milk or buttermilk makes this cake especially tender.)
